New Mysterious Loud Booms in Idaho and California

© 2016 by Linda Moulton Howe

I can tell you for certain it was about 11:40 AM Mtn on Monday, October 17, 2016,
that the booms started with two sharp booms right together that shook the house,
followed by one large and long thirty-second rumbling boom quickly after that.
It covered everywhere from Challis, Idaho, through Jerome, Gooding,
Twin Falls
and some of the outlaying communities.”

- Resident M. H., Gooding, Idaho

During a 48-hour period from October 17-18, 2016, many residents in the Twin Falls
(red circle) region of southern Idaho and in the northern California towns of Montague
and Yreka (Google pointer)not far from Mt. Shasta, reported very loud booms that shook houses.

October 19, 2016 Gooding, Idaho, and Siskiyou County, Calif. - On Tuesday, October 18, 2016, Earthfiles received two emails from Gooding, Idaho, resident, M. H., about ongoing, but unexplained, loud rumbling booms between Gooding and Challis, Idaho. The house-shaking booms began around 11:40 AM Mtn on Monday, October 17, 2016. She wrote: “It started with two sharp booms right together that shook the house, followed by one large rumbling boom for about thirty seconds after that. It covered everywhere from Challis, Idaho, through Jerome, Gooding, Twin Falls and some of the outlying communities.” She enclosed a link to the Chief Meteorologist Brian Neudorff's Facebook page.

Challis in the north to Twin Falls in the south is 190 miles by car. The house-shaking booms
beginning on Monday, October 17, 2016, were reported from Challis to Gooding to Jerome to
Twin Falls. Mountain Home AFB (far left red circle) to Twin Falls is 86 miles. The air
base has not confirmed any connection to the loud, rumbling booms heard
and felt by people from Challis to Twin Falls.

Brian Neudorff Facebook

Meteorologist Neudorff references in his Facebook postings below that “It's those mysterious rumblings we get about 8-10 times a year. ...I've narrowed it down that it has to come from something that gives off a low frequency” and he wonders if the source is Mountain Home AFB.

Re: Loud, unexplained rumbling booms from Gooding to Challis, Idaho
Date: October 18, 2016

“We did have an earthquake the day before this happened, but this is like someone is blasting dynamite across the state. But it is not on the earthquake register and there is no lightning registered in Idaho then. It was strong enough to rattle walls and shake houses in each area.

“The next day on October 19, 2016, M. H. emailed more: “I can tell you for certain it was about 11:40 AM day before yesterday on Monday, October 17, that the booms started with two sharp booms right together that shook the house, followed by one large and long thirty-second rumbling boom quickly after that. It covered everywhere from Challis, Idaho, through Jerome, Gooding, Twin Falls and some of the outlaying communities. After the initial large booms, there have been steady off and on booms through the entire region, including here in Gooding with lighter boom sounds for the last two days. Honestly, the booms sound like distant mortars or like someone is doing explosives. But so far no aircraft has been connected and no one is admitting any blasting. It has to be one of the strangest and strongest boom occurrences we have had in awhile.”

April 2016 - Previous Unexplained Loud Booms
in Twin Falls and Jerome Region

MAGICVALLEY.com, April 4, 2016.

Twin Falls City Councilwoman Ruth Pierce told MAGICVALLEY.com news, “The windows rattled a little bit. It was very short, but I could hear it above the television.” She posted on Facebook at 8:05 PM Sunday, April 3, 2016, “Did anyone just hear a big boom?” More than a dozen people responded that they had heard the loud noise too, including at least one person who lives in Jerome, Idaho. Another Facebook comment was, “It felt like our whole house was going to fall into the canyon.”

The noise was confirmed not to be an earthquake. Seismic data showed on Sunday, April 3, 2016, the only USGS quake on record was a 1.4-magnitude just before 2 PM in the afternoon near the Montana border about 63 miles southeast of Salmon, Idaho, far north from Twin Falls and Jerome.

Oct. 2016: Booms Are Back in Siskiyou County, California

Driving miles from Twin Falls, Idaho, to Montague and Yreka, California, are 625.

Yreka and Montague, California, are about
40 miles northwest of Mount Shasta.

Back in the first week of July 2016, loud, booming noises like large firecrackers exploding were reported to the Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Works. “All of a sudden, we hear this loud, sharp explosion — very quick,” said one of several residents reporting mysterious booming noises about four months ago.

Now on October 18, 2016, around 9 PM Pacific, the following is only a brief excerpt of many boom reports on the Yreka and Montague, California, Siskiyou County Facebook Page:
