6:00 AM Pacific Update – Dead Body in Canal Is California Semi-Truck Driver Who “Mysteriously Vanished” with Engine Still Running On I-5.

6:00 AM Pacific Update  Tuesday, May 21, 2019:  Dead body found in Delta-Mendota canal has been identified by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office as the missing 56-year-old truck driver Satwant Singh Bains. The canal is not far from where Officers with the California Highway Patrol were contacted around 5:00 AM on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, to check out a large, semi-truck with motor running partially blocking the northbound right lane of Interstate 5 and Whitworth Road in Los Banos and driver missing. Bains’s body was found 2 miles south of the idling truck in the canal that has been full from recent rains. The cause of his death is yet to be determined by autopsy.

6:10 PM Pacific Update May 18, 2019 – ABC30-TV in Fresno is reporting that today, at 1:30 PM Pacific time, Merced County Sheriff’s Office deputies in the fourth day of their search for missing truck driver Bains found a dead body in the Delta-Mendota canal in the vicinity of the Los Banos, California, Whitworth Road exit off I-5 freeway.

KFSN ABC30:  “Detective say they cannot confirm whether the man is 56-year-old Satwant Bains, a Fowler truck driver who went missing Wednesday morning, May 15th, near Santa Nella in Merced County on Interstate 5. Authorities have sent the body to the coroner’s office for an autopsy and identification.”

May 18, 2019 Los Banos, California – Officers with the California Highway Patrol were contacted around 5:00 AM on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, to check out a large, semi-truck partially blocking the northbound right lane of Interstate 5 and Whitworth Road in Los Banos.

The officers reported they found a “big rig truck pulling a refrigeration trailer and the truck’s engine was running and the doors were unlocked with no one inside. Officers found a cell phone and wallet inside the truck belonging to Satwant Bains.”

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office sent out a news release asking the public for help that said in part:

“Officers checked the immediate area and could not find Bains. His truck and trailer were towed away to a storage area. Officers contacted Bains’ family and informed them of the situation. Due to Bains being a Fowler, California, resident, his family filed a missing persons report later in the day with the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.

“Bains was reportedly hauling a load to Fairfield (northern California). Family members say it is out of character for Bains to vanish without telling anyone.”

Authorities reported that the mysteriously missing truck driver Satwant Bains “is diabetic and might need medication.”

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office and the Merced County Sheriff’s Office completed a thorough check of the Los Banos, California, area where the truck was found partially blocking freeway exit and still idling. California Highway Police helicopter, H-40 was also used in the search without success.
