“The security guard was ‘AWOL,’ absent without leave,
because he was taken by this orange thing in the sky.”
“We had full Colonels in pickup trucks in the missile field looking
for these lights that would park (in the air) on top of a missile site
and shut the thing down. That happened probably five or six times
a year. That stuff was kept very, very quiet.”
- James Klancnik, retired USAF Msgt., Ellsworth AFB, SD
Updated with mp3 audio interview below / originally filed October 29, 2013 Spearfish, South Dakota - Since doing the October 24th Earthfiles and COAST broadcast about the Ellsworth AFB abduction of a Minuteman II nuclear missile site security guard from Cactus Flats Delta-09 Minuteman Missile Squadron, I have learned that those who have tried to access the files from the 1970s of this abduction incident at Cactus Flats have discovered all those files “are missing.”
Further, the Master Sergeant referenced in Part 1 by Perry Manack as “Col. Klink,” has been confirmed as James Frank Klancnik, retired USAF Master Sergeant who supervised 550 men and women at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota from 1972 - 1977. That's when there were 150 nuclear Minuteman II missiles underground at that base. Msgt. Klancnik was in fact involved in the security guard's abduction investigation and corrects the color of the light that took the guard as “orange, not blue.”
DD 214 summary of Master Sergeant James Frank Klancnik's history at Ellsworth AFB,
South Dakota, from January 1, 1972, to honorable discharge on June 30, 1977. USAF
MSgt. Klancnik served in the 44th Combat Support Group (SAC) at Ellsworth AFB from
1972 - 1977. He was a supervisor responsible for 550 men and women at Ellsworth AFB
and personally investigated the Delta-09 security guard's abduction by an orange light
from an I-90 construction site to a field 6.4 miles north of Wall, SD, in the fall of 1973.

Alert Facilities in the early 1970s. Near Wall (far right red circle) along I-90 that was
undergoing construction in fall 1973 was the Cactus Flats Delta 9 (D-09) Minuteman II
site from which the Ellsworth AFB security guard was abducted with
missing time and became conscious 6.4 miles north of Wall, SD.
Minuteman Missile National Historic Site was established in 1999 to illustrate the history
and significance of the Cold War, the arms race, and intercontinental ballistic missile
(ICBM) development. This National Historic Site preserves the last remaining
Minuteman II ICBM system in the United States. 450 of the newer Minuteman III
missiles are still on active duty at Malmstrom AFB, Montana; Minot AFB, North Dakota;
and F. E. Warren AFB, Wyoming. In black inset, the missile silo known as launch
facility Delta Nine (D-09) was constructed in 1963 six miles east from
the town of Wall, SD, in eastern Pennington County.

ten silos associated with Delta Flight. At the height of the Cold War with the Soviet Union,
Delta-09 was one of 150 Minuteman II missiles in South Dakota in the American
arsenal of 1,000 Minuteman II missile silo sites across the Great Plains region.
Today in 2013, there are 450 Minuteman III nuclear missiles underground
and operational in silos across the Great Plains.

This was a 12-foot-diameeter and 80 feet deep reinforced concrete with steel plate-lined silo.
The Minutemen in this D-09 complex remained on alert for nearly 30 years, until the wing was inactivated following the signing of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) by President George Bush and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991. Under the terms of the treaty,
the missiles in this complex were removed from their silos. In 1994, the 44th Missile Wing
was inactivated. All sites in the complex, except D-01 and D-09, have been destroyed.

James F. Klancnik, retired USAF Master Sergeant, 44th Combat Support Group (SAC) at Ellsworth AFB, South Dakota, 1972 - 1977, currently living in Spearfish, South Dakota: “What is now Interstate 90 near Ellsworth AFB at that time (Fall 1973) was being developed as an interstate highway. At Cactus Flats, there was a lot of work being done because they had to tear down the overhead bridge that was first put in there because because it was put in in the wrong direction! (laughs) So there were a lot of trucks out there at night and during the daytime and it was muddy and it was terrible! The Launch Control Facility (LCF) was about two miles away from where Cactus Flats is.
THAT WAS DELTA-09.
Delta-09 Missile Site Outer Zone
Alarms Kept Going Off
Yes, I think so. That Delta-09 missile site was having outer zone alarms. When you have an outer zone alarm, several things cause that. It can be a tumbleweed that blows inside the fence. It can be a large bird that sits on top of one of the radar units. It can be a snowdrift that compromises the security area. In order to fix that, you have to send out a team of young men to see why the outer zone alarm was going off. That's what we were doing and these two young men got out there. When they got to Cactus Flats, which is almost a mile away from where the missile site is the road was all blocked because the contractors had been working on it and this was at night. They had to go get a contractor to get a bulldozer to pull their truck out of the mud.
One of the two air men security guards said he was going to go to the Winnebago that was parked there and that person in the Winnebago took him down the road and the security guard got out of the Winnebago and he climbed over one fence and went up on a secondary road and was waiting for the bulldozer to get the truck unstuck.
WHAT WAS THE WINNEBAGO DOING THERE?
That we don't know. I had the license number of the Winnebago and I had a lot of other information and I spent several months tracking that unit down and believe it or not, it was not registered in Mexico, it wasn't registered in the United States and it was not registered in Canada.
SO THE WINNEBAGO ITSELF IS A MYSTERY?
That's correct. There were two people and a young person in it. Anyway, they took the airman out to the road to wait for the truck. It was dark.
Orange - Not Blue - Aerial Light Abducted
Ellsworth AFB Security Guard
The last thing the young security guard remembered seeing was this orange light coming out of the sky out of the clouds. This was a rainy night. It was terrible! The orange light came out and that's the last thing he remembered.
NOT BLUE LIGHT?
No, it was orange.
THE REPORT I HAVE ORIGINALLY IS FROM PERRY MANACK. HE WAS AN E4 SERGEANT WORKING ON THE MAINTENANCE OF EVERYTHING THAT SUPPORTS MISSILES. HE TALKED WITH SECURITY GUARDS DIRECTLY AT THE TIME, WHO SAID THE TWO SECURITY GUARDS WERE SITTING IN A PICKUP TRUCK BEHIND A WINNEBAGO WHEN THEY SAW A LIGHT IN THE SKY. ONE OF THE MEN GOT OUT TO WALK TOWARDS THE WINNEBAGO TO SEE IF THEY NEEDED HELP.
AND THE SECURITY GUARD LEFT IN THE PICK UP TRUCK SEES A BLUE LIGHT COME FROM THE SKY DOWN AND SURROUNDED THE SECURITY GUARD WALKING TOWARDS THE WINNEBAGO AND THE TWO SECURITY GUARDS BOTH LOST CONSCIOUSNESS. THE MAN IN THE PICKUP TRUCK LOST CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE MAN WHO WAS WALKING TOWARDS THE WINNEBAGO ENDED UP NORTH OF WALL DRUG WITH BOTH OF HIS BOOTS OFF AND HAD TO WALK TO WALL DRUG TO ASK THEM TO CALL ELLSWORTH AFB AND TELL THEM HE WAS AT WALL DRUG WITHOUT HIS SHOES AND DID NOT KNOW WHAT HAD HAPPENED.
Communication Systems Did Not Work
After Orange Light Appeared
OK, that is not what I wish to tell you, OK? After the orange light came down, none of their communication systems worked.
SO WHEN THE ORANGE LIGHT APPEARED OUT OF THE CLOUDS IN THE RAIN, ALL OF THE BATTERY POWER AND MOTOR IN THE PICKUP TRUCK CEASED TO FUNCTION?
He wasn't in the pickup truck. The Winnebago took him down the road and he climbed over one fence and was waiting for the truck to come up there because the truck was stuck in the mud. So, while he (security guard) was standing there waiting for the truck, this orange light came out of the clouds and that's the only thing he remembered.
After that happened, when the truck got free of the mud, the other security guard found out his colleague was not there waiting, so he called his Sergeant and the Sergeant asked, ‘Where did he go?’ The other security guard said, ‘We don't know.’ I'm not sure if he (other security guard) saw the orange light or not. I can't remember that, but we had 15 people on that north/south road looking for the security guard that went with the Winnebago.
Abducted Ellsworth AFB Security Guard
On Back in Rain 6.4 Miles North of Wall, SD
He actually landed 6.4 miles north on that Cottonwood Road. He was in a field. He only climbed over one fence. He was laying on his back and when he woke up in the rain - it was pouring rain on him - he got his weapon back and he started walking towards the lights in the sky, which happened to be from Wall, South Dakota, and that was probably seven or eight miles away.
OK, NOW THE WEAPON. THE STORY I HAD FROM PERRY MANACK WAS THAT WHEN THE SECURITY GUARD WHO HAD WALKED AWAY FROM THE PICKUP TRUCK HAD GONE TO THE WINNEBAGO, HE REMEMBERS BEING SURROUNDED BY THE STRANGE LIGHT AND THEN BECAME CONSCIOUS AND FOUND HIMSELF IN THE FIELD – HIS GUN WAS OFF TO THE SIDE OF HIS BODY.
Yes, it was in the mud.
One Laced Boot Was Missing
from Security Guard and Was Never Found
YOU DO NOT THINK HE HAD TWO SHOES AND SOCKS OFF?
Oh, no! He started walking towards the lights that were reflecting off the clouds. He did not know what the lights were, but he was going that way because that's where it was lighted. After he started walking, he realized that one of his boots was missing. It was a fully laced combat boot, which was not a zipper type, so it had to have been taken off. In the medical exam, they determined he had about 500 cactus pricks in that foot.
SO IT WAS BARE - IT WAS SKIN HE WAS WALKING ON IN THAT FOOT.
He probably had his sock on, but I don't know that.
Rapid City Insurance Agent Encountered
Security Guard After Abduction
“He had never been with anybody that was so frightened in his life.”
Anyway, when he got to this fence, that was the only fence he climbed over and that was on the north/south Cottonwood Road. A senior gentleman from an insurance company was taking that road going back to Rapid City. He stopped and saw the young man (security guard) standing there and the insurance man realized something was wrong because he did not see his military truck or anything else and here's a man at about 11:30 PM to midnight at night.
So the insurance man rolled his window down and asked the young security guard a lot of questions such as ‘Who is your Squadron Commander? Who is your Base Commander? What organization are you with? What's going on?’
The insurance agent told us investigating later that the young man tried to answer as many questions as he could. I personally interviewed the insurance agent and he said that when he let the young man in his car to take him up to the other Launch Control Facility, he said as a senior insurance man that he had never been with anybody that was so frightened in his life.
IS IT TRUE THAT HIS COLLEAGUE IN THE PICKUP TRUCK ALSO LOST TIME?
I knew nothing about that - no one ever told me.
Abducted Security Guard Charged “AWOL”
“We walked in that field for a couple of hours
and we could not find his combat boot.”
So he took the security guard up to the Launch Control Facility where he was disarmed, taken off duty and charged as ‘AWOL,’ absent without leave, because of this orange thing in the sky that took him.
Then he was taken back to the base and put under medical guard and then he was taken a couple of days later to the psychiatrist. Myself and two chiefs - we went out to that same area that the security guard was picked up (by insurance man). We walked in that field for a couple of hours and we could not find his combat boot. We were a Chief Master Sergeant, another Chief Master Sergeant and me, a Master Sergeant. We never found it.
JAMES, DID YOU FIND TRACKS OF WHERE HE HAD BEEN?
No, couldn't see anything. It was all grass and field.
AND IT HAD BEEN RAINING.
Oh, yeah, terrible rain!
DID YOU EVER GET TO TALK DIRECTLY WITH THE ABDUCTED SECURITY GUARD?
HAS ANYONE EVER GIVEN YOU DETAILS ABOUT WHAT THAT ABDUCTED ELLSWORTH SECURITY GUARD SAID HAPPENED?
No, other than the fact that I did read his medical profile of what the young security guard said.
Psychiatrist's Written Comments About
Abducted Ellsworth AFB Security Guard
WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER READING?
The security guard said he was standing waiting for the truck to come up (to get their security pickup truck out of the mud). And this orange light came down and then he woke up in the field in the rain. He looked at the lights in the sky that were reflecting from Wall (6.4 miles south of him) up to the clouds and he walked that direction because it was the only lighted area. He said he climbed over one fence. Along the way, he realized one of his boots was missing and he had all these cactus pricks in his foot.
The psychiatrist's report described damage to the security guard's foot and then were the words the guard had suffered ‘temporary amnesia.’
SO, THE PSYCHIATRIST'S REPORT ITSELF ADDRESSED THE FACT THERE WAS DAMAGE TO A FOOT AND THE ONLY WORDS WRITTEN ON THE PSYCHIATRIST'S REPORT WERE ‘TEMPORARY AMNESIA’
Yes, ma'am. Those were the only two things we got. So they kept everything else secret. Interesting, huh? (sighs)
YES, IT IS, AND I WONDER IF HE HAD CONSCIOUS MEMORY ERUPT IN DREAMS, WHICH IS USUALLY THE WAY IT HAPPENS?
I don't know. But I think he was transferred from our squadron to some other squadron, maybe up in North Dakota. Then he was honorably discharged from the Air Force.
HOW SOON AFTER THE MISSING TIME ABDUCTION?
Less than a year, I think.
THE LIKELIHOOD IS THAT THE GOVERNMENT DID NOT WANT SOMEBODY WHO HAD BEEN ABDUCTED BY EXTRATERRESTRIALS AT ELLSWORTH AFB, A MINUTEMAN NUCLEAR MISSILE BASE, TO BE TALKING ABOUT WHATEVER HAPPENED INSIDE OF WHAT TOOK HIM.
I would say that is probably an accurate evaluation and since he got out of the armed forces, I was tracking him. He came from back East, maybe New Jersey. Then I tracked him beyond that after all the years had gone by (since 1973 abduction incident) and he was a law enforcement person in Oregon or Washington State. He has never been in any kind of trouble. He is now in law enforcement!
Other High Strangeness At Ellsworth AFB
Minuteman II Missiles
HAVING BEEN A MASTER SERGEANT WITH RESPONSIBILITY FOR 550 MEN AND WOMEN AT ELLSWORTH AFB IN THE 1970S, WHAT OTHER KNOWLEDGE DO YOU HAVE ABOUT UFO INTRUSIONS IN MINUTEMAN MISSILE SITES?
From time to time, we had full Colonels in pickup trucks in the missile field looking for these lights that would park (in the air) on top of a missile site and shut the thing down. That happened probably five or six times a year. That stuff was kept very, very quiet.
WHAT WAS THE DESCRIPTION OF THE AERIAL OBJECT THAT COULD KEEP SHUTTING DOWN THE MINUTEMAN MISSILE SITES?
A large, bright, white light that would come down and hover over the top of the missile complex door that is an 80-ton reinforced steel and concrete door. If the missile has to be fired and launched, that door gets blown off.
If it's not going to be fired, the maintenance people can open the door. It's got gears and all that kind of stuff. That door is 80 tons! But those darn lights could park (in the air) above those doors and shut the missile down!
THIS SHUT DOWN WAS HAPPENING HALF A DOZEN TIMES A YEAR?
I would say between 4 and 7 times a year. That was happening on a semi-regular basis from the early 1960s at Ellsworth.
FROM EARLY 1960S, AND YOU LEFT ELLSWORTH IN WHAT YEAR?
I was medically retired in 1977.
SO FROM THE 1960S TO 1977 AT LEAST, YOU HAVE FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BRIGHT LIGHTS BEING ABLE TO HOVER OVER OUR MINUTEMAN MISSILE SILOS AND SHUT THEM DOWN.
From time to time, yes, 4 to 7 times a year.
AND COLONELS WOULD BE OUT IN MILITARY PICKUP TRUCKS ...
Looking for those things! (laughs)
LOOKING FOR THE LIGHTS...
... and their wives did not like having them out at night.
DID YOU EVER TALK DIRECTLY WITH A COLONEL, WHO HAD BEEN OUT LOOKING FOR ONE OF THESE LIGHTS THAT COULD SHUT DOWN THE MINUTEMAN MISSILES?
No, and that's probably because they don't want to talk about it.
THEY ARE AFRAID OF THE REPERCUSSIONS IF THEY TALK?
That was all separated from official stuff.
OFFICIALLY UFOS AND EXTRATERRESTRIALS DID NOT EXIST?
You are correct.
BUT IT WAS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM YOU ALL HAD.
(laughs) Yeah, from time to time it was a mess!
DID YOU KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING AT MALMSTROM, MINOT AND F. W. WARREN DURING THAT TIME?
Nothing about UFOs.
SO YOU DID NOT KNOW ABOUT EVERYTHING THAT ROBERT SALAS KNEW ABOUT AND WAS REPORTING AT MALMSTROM?
Nope, not at all.
DURING THAT PERIOD OF TIME, THE UFO INTRUSIONS ON THE NUCLEAR MISSILE BASES WOULD HAVE BEEN SO COMPARTMENTALIZED THAT NONE OF YOU WHO MIGHT HAVE GAINED FROM KNOWING WHAT WAS HAPPENING AT THE OTHER MINUTEMAN RANGES ...
YOU NEVER KNEW ANYTHING THAT WAS HAPPENING?
Nope. That just was not talked about.
Rapid City School of Mines
and Technology Symposium
WHAT WERE THE CIRCUMSTANCES THAT BROUGHT YOU TO TALK ABOUT ALL THIS AT THE SYMPOSIUM WITH ASTRONOMERS AND OTHERS AT THE SCHOOL OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY IN RAPID CITY?
There was a UFO conference going on down there (fall 1973) and we were sitting out there having coffee and talking about it. And there were some other Sergeants that were in that astronomy meeting that knew about things that happened in the missile complex also.
WELL, PERRY MANACK WHO WAS WORKING ON THE MISSILE MAINTENANCE WAS AT THE CONFERENCE AND SAID HE SAW THAT YOU STOOD UP AND TOLD ALL ABOUT THIS ABDUCTION OF THE SECURITY GUARD.
Yes, and the only thing I would have said is exactly what I spoke to you about here.
BUT HOW DID YOU COME TO SPEAK PUBLICLY IN 1973 AT THIS CONFERENCE IN RAPID CITY, SOUTH DAKOTA?
Well, it was a UFO conference about strange lights and about strange things and a lot of my colleagues were also there. We were all just talking about all the different things that were happening at the Minuteman missile sites. We had 150 nuclear missiles stuck in the ground out there.
YOU WERE NOT A FORMAL SPEAKER AT THE CONFERENCE?
Correct. I was not a formal speaker.
IT WAS PRESENTED THAT YOU SPOKE TO THE SYMPOSIUM AND THAT YOU STARTED OUT ASKING, ‘IS THERE ANYONE HERE FROM THE GOVERNMENT?’ THEN TWO MEN IN BLACK SUITS, WHITE SHIRTS, NARROW BLACK TIES STOOD UP AND SAID THEY WERE.
I don't remember that.
AND PERRY MANACK SAID THEY LOOKED LIKE THE CLASSIC MEN IN BLACK FROM THE MOVIES, BUT THEY WERE IN THIS SYMPOSIUM AUDIENCE IN WHICH YOU, THE ELLSWORTH AFB MASTER SERGEANT, WERE SPEAKING TO THE AUDIENCE IN WHICH THE TWO MEN IN BLACK HAD STOOD UP AND ACKNOWLEDGED THEY WERE THERE TO LISTEN AND THAT YOU WENT THROUGH THE ENTIRE ABDUCTION OF THE SECURITY GUARD.
Linda, what I've spoke to you about here is exactly what I said to anybody else.”
